College Hero
88.3 WCQR, Gray, TN, and King College, Bristol, TN, partnered together to send one local civil servant back to school to finish their education, tuition-free.
Over the past month and a half, local Fire, EMS, Police, Military, and Community Volunteers were asked to submit their application for the scholarship. The field was narrowed to five finalists:
Finalists were then interviewed at 88.3 WCQR, and WCQR listeners were asked to vote for the finalist they believed should receive the scholarship.
Over 5,000 votes were tallied, and Sgt. Greg Brown of the Bristol, TN Police Department, was announced as the recipient of a full-tuition scholarship to King College’s Adult Degree Completion Program.
“Thank you so much for this opportunity,” Brown said during acceptance of his award, “It means so much that you actually care enough to offer this for people who serve others. I’m speechless.”
Sgt. Brown has served the Bristol, TN Police Department for over 12 years, but has also served his country. After September 11, 2001, he placed his education on hold to enroll in the Navy Reserves. He was stationed at the Iraq, Kuwait border for nine months.
Brown has been married for 18 years. He is the father of three, and also serves the community by volunteering his time to a local, non-profit, youth baseball league.
In addition to his schooling, Sgt. Brown receives a fifty dollar gift certificate to the King College Bookstore, Tornado Alley, textbooks from E-Campus Virtual Bookstore, and a laptop featuring necessary educational software from Salsarita's.
After the announcement was made that Sgt. Brown had received the full tuition scholarship, Micah Crews, director of recruitment for graduate and professional studies at King College, announced that the school was also extending a generous half-tuition scholarship to the remaining finalists.
“You are all heroes,” said Crews, “and this is one way that King College can say ‘Thank You’ for your service.”
The 88.3 WCQR studios were alive with excitement after both announcements, as a reception was held for the finalists and their families.
“We are very excited for Greg, and for all our finalists,” said Chalmer Harper, 88.3 WCQR Program Director. “King College has gone above and beyond the call of duty for those that serve us, each and every day. We are proud to partner with them, and thankful to be a part of making dreams come true.”
